With a range of backgrounds and experience, our staff are passionate about making a difference for those seeking sanctuary. Several staff members have lived experience of the UK’s asylum system, and we actively work to create a welcoming and supportive workplace that encourages personal and professional development.

Our team work with the guidance of our Senior Management team and an experienced board of independent Trustees.

Lauren Scott MBE

Lauren Scott MBE

Chief Executive Officer

After joining us as a Senior Manager in 2018, Lauren has been our Chief Executive Officer since 2020. Working closely with our Trustees and senior staff, Lauren oversees the development of our projects and strategic goals.

With a background in international law and human rights, Lauren’s experience working with wide range of charities has helped her develop her frontline and managerial experience, including operating a winter night shelter, and working with families affected by energy poverty. Outside of Refugees at Home, Lauren is a Trustee for Just Rights Scotland.

Carly Whyborn

Chief Operating Officer

Carly joined Refugees at Home in 2022 and oversees the day-to-day operational work of Refugees at Home. She is the designated Safeguarding Lead for R@H.  She has extensive experience of working in charities, and particularly in the refugee and asylum sector.

Areej Osman

Areej Osman

Placement Team Manager (currently on maternity leave)

Areej leads our Placement Team, ensuring that we can match as many guests as possible with our network of hosts.

She has an MSc in Environmental Management from The University of Nottingham and a degree in Zoology from Sudan. With firsthand experience of the asylum system in the UK, she has dedicated the past decade to working with refugees, migrants and people seeking asylum. Areej is a Trustee with Room to Heal, and a skilled senior leader with broad experience in the charity sector. She is also a qualified yoga and trauma-informed yoga teacher and runs a book review podcast for Arabic speaking communities.

Tiffany Cole

Volunteer and Engagement Manager

Tiffany is the Volunteer and Engagement Manager at Refugees at Home, responsible for improving the experience of our hosts and home visitors and developing relationships with refugee supporting groups across the UK. She joined the placement team in 2022 and previously worked in Corporate Events for over 10 years for Barclays Wealth, EYG and Deutsche Bank and after taking a break with her family, volunteered with several refugee charities before joining Refugees at Home.

Rossana Tumbarello

Rossana Tumbarello

Operations Manager

Rossana is our Operations Manager and plays a central role in supporting our Chief Operations Officer, and assisting with the critical functions of the charity.

Originally from Italy, with an academic background in Japan studies, she joined Refugees at Home after graduating from SOAS University with a Masters in International Politics, developing a strong interest in migration & diaspora politics.

Communications and Digital Media Manager

Ed is our Communications and Digital Media Manager and is responsible for promoting Refugees at Home’s work across a range of channels. He joined Refugees at Home in 2024, with over ten years of non-profit experience working with both local organisations and international NGOs.

Michaela Melemendi

Housing and Move-on Manager

Michaela is our Housing & Move-on Manager. She focuses on supporting the team to help guests to move-on from hosting into settled accommodation, as well as working with local accommodation providers to establish move-on pathways for our guests. Michaela spent the last 5 years working and volunteering in the homelessness and migrant sectors before joining Refugees at Home in early 2025.

Head of Fundraising

As our Head of Fundraising, Lina helps deliver our vital fundraising strategy to ensure we can continue to deliver our mission.

An experienced fundraiser committed to helping people access safety, opportunity and support, Lina previously spent eight years at Speech and Language UK, helping young people with communication challenges get the best chance in life.

She’s also worked at Young Lives vs Cancer, Friendship Works, Macmillan Cancer Support and Feed the Minds, and CFAB.

Chair of Trustees

Daniel helped set up Refugees at Home in 2015 and has been an active part of the charity ever since. As well as hosting a number of our guests, he is currently our Chair of Trustees, playing a key role in developing our strategy and ensuring we operate efficiently and effectively.

He is a senior equity partner at leading law firm, Travers Smith and an expert in corporate governance and diversity and inclusion. He is also the Chair of Trustees at YMCA London, City and North.

Trustee/IT

Oliver has been our IT Trustee since November 2019, providing invaluable oversight and support for all our technology needs. Oliver has a background in leading tech teams and delivering large programmes at law firms and is currently the Chief Technology Officer at Travers Smith.

Trustee

Matt Blacker is the Chief Executive of Hope for the Young, a charity supporting young refugees in the UK through mentoring, advocacy, and financial support. For the past 12 years, he has also worked for the British Red Cross, delivering their Young Refugee and Befriending Programme in London. He has a background in operations, project management, peer training, and business development within the charity sector.

Clare is our Communications Trustee and has been a Refugees at Home host for many years. She has more than 25 years’ marketing and communications experience and is currently Director of Marketing and Engagement at Tommy’s, the pregnancy and baby charity. Clare has held Director-level roles at mental health and education charities, digital technology companies, pioneering start-ups and marketing agencies.

Trustee/Company Secretary

Rebecca began her career as a solicitor in a City law firm, specialising in international corporate litigation, before working at the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge.

She currently works as a film producer and programmer with a focus on elevating new and marginalised voices. She led the team which set up the successful independent cinema Saffron Screen and is a Trustee for Reclaim the Frame, a director of Theatre Inspiring Change, and a mentor with Arts Emergency.

Magid el-Amin

Trustee

Magid was born in Khartoum, Sudan and has a deep interest in migration, international aid and resettlement.

He has over a decade of experience in the non-profit sector and is currently the Director of Evidence & Insights at Catch22 where he focuses on making data accessible, straightforward, and ethical.  Previously, he led on data intelligence, impact measurement and predictive analytics at Comic Relief, NSPCC and The Children’s Society. 

Jon Hughes

After signing up to host with us, Jon was so taken with the experience that he decided to join the organisation as a Trustee.

He is currently the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer with British International Investment, following on from an incredibly successful career in finance and risk management.

As our Treasurer, Jon helps monitor our financial management, ensuring our funding is used as effectively as possible.

At age 6, Lord Dubs came to the UK on the Kindertransport. Now, with a long and illustrious career in politics, he uses his voice and experience to advocate for those who, like him, have come to a new country seeking safety.

He is the former MP for Battersea and Battersea South and was appointed as a Labour peer in 1994.

Ahmad al-Rashid

Ahmad al-Rashid

Ambassador

Ahmad was born in Syria, and graduated from Aleppo University with a BA in English Literature. He worked to support displaced Syrians and Iraqis with the UN in Kurdistan before moving to the UK in 2015.

Since then, he’s worked with a range of organisations supporting refugees and people seeking asylum, and at present, is a Project Assistant with the International Organisation for Migration.
